The Exploding Hearts-Guitar Romantic (Dirtnap/Screaming Apple 2002)

One of the saddest stories of punk rock is behind this band.While they were on their peak,3/4 of them lost their life in car accident,going back home after a US tour.All of them were pretty young too.
This record is their first and only full release.There is also a collection called "Shattered" which combines some of their demos and 7's.
What can you say about them?Power pop mixed with punk rock,sensitive,melodic and just perfect.The only survining member,Terry Six,plays in a band called "Th Nice Boys",in the same vein as Exploding Hearts.
Get this lp while its still available(the second press) cause it's gonna be really scarce in the future.And it is excellent.

Dr. Know - Plug-In Jesus (Mystic 1984)

What can i say about this band,this record?Plainly raging hardcore punk with  bites of guitar wanking(not so many to make you puke),this is an ultra classic record by a much underrated band.Fast,angry,with a vocalist that spits fire,a true monument of the Oxnard scene.If you love classic american hardcore of the mid 80s just go for it,or if you heard bands like RKL,Ill Repute,Stalag 13,this will be another lucky number...
I have read in the latest Artcore issue,that Doug Moody,the 70teen year old owner of Mystic records is alive and well and keeps the Mystic alive with many reprints.Fuck me if this isn't THE most punk rock thing i have ever heard.Cheers to you Doug.

Knugen Faller-Lugna Favoriter (Ny Våg Records 2006)

One of my favorite records of the decade.I really liked those Swedes more than Gorilla Angreb,more than Libyans,more than any other girl-fronted band of the last few years.Maybe the only ones that can equal them are Masshysteri.
Highly enjoyable punk rock with female vocals in the tradition of X Ray Spex,melodic and poppy but still punk.Lyrics in Swedish of course (and i cannot understand a thing but thats ok).

Wavves-Wavvves (Fat Possum 2009)

Fuck the fact that this band (well,their last record called "King of the beach") is a favorite among the boring hipsters,people that used to love Franz Ferdinand and that kind of crap.This lp,their second one,is a brilliant example of perfectly executed noise punk.Equal parts of dream pop,Shoegaze,lo-fi are mixed and the result is just extraordinary.
Sadly,the new lp is just a crappy attempt to make the mainstream easily accessible.Fuck this shit,first 2 records and especially this one are great.

Dream Syndicate - The Days Of Wine And Roses (Ruby Records 1982)

This is one of the best records ever made.A true masterpiece of punk.The guitar driven sound of Dream Syndicate was something pretty much unknown is that days scene.The Paisley Underground was proud that had bands like Green On Red,Fuzztones,Opal,Rain Parade,but this record is the milestone of this short-lived movement.
Dream Syndicate were based on Los Angeles,but they were most known in Europe(in Greece,especially in the 80s/90s,Steve Wynn was highly rated).Awesome band,ahead of their time.The combination of punk rock with Velvet Underground,Classic rock and some country is truly unique.

The Lillingtons-The backchannel broadcast (Lookout! Records 2001)

This record plays on my record player for the past 5 years.I cannot be fair enough if i say that the Lillingtons were as great as all the punk rock greats like Ramones,Zero Boys,i will just admit that this record (and all Lillingtons records) is the best one to make my day.Their lyrics are awesome,the music strikes you like a lightning,and the vocals-heh,best punk rock singer right now?
Sadly missed,but at least Kody Tobleman made Teenage Bottlerocket that continues the Lillingtons way in a more of a poppy thing.

The Kids-s/t (Philips 1978)

This Belgian band was one of the first and best punk rock bands ever.In my eyes,this classic debut is surely on the list of the best 50 punk lps ever,and their second one is on the list of 200 easily.
Awesome and classic punk rock of the early years,you cannot even find a band with a similar sound but if you love early Ramones and the first two Saints records you will surely love The Kids self titled lp.
Rereleased on Havoc records a few years back,a gift to the new generation.

The Estranged-The subliminal man (Dirtnap 2010)

This is hands down the best lp of 2010 in my list (which is a huge one).Gone is the total Wipers worship(that we love),still there are some elements of Greg Sage's classic band,but now,in this second lp,you can hear the echoes of The Chameleons,the early Cure,even a more melodic Joy Division approach.
Fantastic record by a band destined to be great.Get now or cry later.

Screeching Weasel-My Brain Hurts (Lookout! Records 1991)

This is one of the best Ramones-influenced lp's ever.In this record,their third one,SW throw away their more hardcore approach of the first records and instead of playing lightning fast anthems,they compose perfect melodic punk rock songs.This album is a winner and it's a shame not to (at least) listen to it.

Record buyers are not suckers.

Παραφράζοντας τον τίτλο του δίσκου των Poison Idea (Record collectors are pretentious assholes),θα μιλήσουμε για την αγορά δίσκων και το downloading γενικώς.
Το downloading δεν είναι κατακριτέο.Εξάλλου,είναι καλύτερα σίγουρα να ακούς έναν δίσκο πριν τον αγοράσεις-δεν λέει να πέφτεις σε φόλες πλέον καθόλου,δεν μας παίρνει και οικονομικά...
Αλλά,
Αν το downloading γίνει αυτοσκοπός,και όχι μέσο προώθησης μουσικής (με σκοπό την μελλοντική αγορά) τότε έχουμε πρόβλημα.Και το πρόβλημα αυτό βρίσκεται στην D.I.Y σκηνή και όχι στο mainstream.
Δεν μου καίγεται καρφί για τους κάθε βλάκες Killswitch Engage και τους κάθε παπάρες Dropkick Murphys-αυτοί έχουν τις πάμπολες πωλήσεις τους και δεν τους καίγεται καρφάκι για το αν 100.000 άτομα κατεβάσουν τους δίσκους τους και δεν τους αγοράσουν καν.
Η D.I.Y σκηνή όμως?Μπάντες που τυπώνουν με στερήσεις 1000 κόπιες αυτοχρηματοδοτούμενες και βλέπουν τις 700 να κάθονται (και αυτό ενώ είναι και καλές μπάντες ταυτόχρονα),distro να κλείνουν το ένα μετά το άλλο (παρά τις πολυ χαμηλές τιμές που έχουν,βλέπε Sound Idea Distribution),δισκάδικα εξειδικευμένα  (και όχι σούπερ μάρκετ φάση Μετρόπολις) να βαράνε διάλυση επειδή πλέον όλοι προτιμούν να κατεβάσουν και όχι να στηρίξουν.
Σύμφωνοι,δεν υπάρχουν λεφτά.Για δίσκους όχι,αλλά για μπύρες,μπάφους,ρουχαλάκια υπάρχουν πάντα ε?Το punk και το hardcore είναι τόσο σημαντικά και έχουν διατηρηθεί μέσα στο πέρασμα των ετών,γιατί είχαν απλά ένα σπουδαίο χαρακτηριστικο:Κάθε μέλος της σκηνής έπαιρνε αλλά και έδινε μέσα στην σκηνή,από αυτήν και για αυτήν.Αυτό το πράγμα τείνει να εκλείψει,μιάς και πλέον αντιμετωπίζονται σαν ευκαιριακές πουτάνες.Κάνει ο καθένας την πλάκα του,δεν στηρίζει,δεν δίνει αγάπη,και μόνο παίρνει:εμφάνιση,μαγκειά,πόζα,"εναλλακτική" ιδεολογία.
Έτσι λοιπόν κανένας σχεδόν στην ελλάδα δεν αγοράζει δίσκους και δεν στηρίζει,γιατι πολύ απλά το τσάμπα είναι τρόπος ζωής.Κόψε ρε μάγκα και δώσε 10-15ε τον μήνα σε κάτι που αγαπάς.Δεν είναι τόσο ακριβοί οι δίσκοι.
Και για του λόγου το αληθές,οι κάτοικοι Θεσσαλονίκης (και όχι μόνο) μπορούν να τσεκάρουν το παρακάτω εξαιρετικό δισκάδικο που βρίσκεται στην Ροτόντα.Τιμές εξαιρετικές (τίποτα δεν ξεπερνάει τα 17ε),και το παλικάρι που το έχει το δουλεύει πραγματικά με μεράκι.Έλα,μην είσαι τσίπης!Αν λες ότι γουστάρεις punk και hardcore (και όχι μόνο),επισκέψου το...

Έρχεται εκεί που δεν την περιμένεις.Αλλά έρχεται.Οι φίλοι σου μετατρέπονται όλοι σε μηχανές παραγωγής χρήματος,το παιδικό τους χαμόγελο έχει σβήσει και έχει αντικατασταθεί από το άπληστο γέλιο,εκεί που είχες να εμπιστευτείς όλο τον κόσμο ξαφνικά έχεις δυσκολία να εμπιστευτείς ακόμα και τον ίδιο σου τον εαυτό.

Τι παθαίνουν οι άνθρωποι μόλις πλησιάσουν τα τριάντα?Γιατί άραγε τους φαίνονται όλα μουντά,θολά και μονότονα?Γιατι οι ίδιοι μετατρέπουν την καθημερινότητα τους σε μία ατέρμονη αποστείρωση?Ερωτήματα που θα μένουν πάντα αναπάντητα για όλους εμάς που νιώθουμε μέσα μας παιδιά.

Είναι αλήθεια.Ο άνθρωπος καθως πλησιάζει σε αυτήν την ηλικία γίνεται όλο και πιο οπορτουνιστικός,όλο και πιο άπληστος,όλο και πιο αδιάφορος για τους γύρω του.Το βλέπω κάθε μέρα πλέον,στους φίλους μου,σε ανθρώπους που συμπαθούσα,στον δρόμο καθώς περπατάω.Βιαστικό βήμα,σκυθρωπό βλέμμα,αδιάφορες κινήσεις.

Γιατί χάνεται το πάθος για ζωή?Γιατί στα 30 σου φαίνονται όλα όσα έκανες στο παρελθόν ως αστεία?Γιατί κάποιοι ντρέπονται για το παρελθόν και το διαγράφουν μονοκονδυλιά?Δεν ζούσαν τότε?Δεν ερωτευόντουσαν?Δεν επικοινωνούσαν?Πλέον όμως ούτε ερωτεύονται,ούτε επικοινωνούν…

Ίσως να φταίει ότι αντιμετωπίζω το χρήμα σαν κάτι που απλά θα με βοηθήσει να περάσω όμορφα την ζωή μου.Δεν είναι προτεραιότητα για εμένα να αποκτήσω ακριβό αυτοκίνητο,ούτε την σούπερ γαμαουα ηλεκτρική συσκευή.Είμαι ευτυχισμένος με αυτά που έχω,και δεν είμαι ευτυχισμένος επειδή τα έχω,αλλά επειδή μπορώ να τα χαίρομαι.Οι περισσότεροι όμως γύρω μου χολοσκάνε. «Λεφτά,να πάρω αυτό/εκείνο,το άλλο-αυτό θα με έκανε ευτυχισμένο».Ε εγώ και 100.000.000 ευρώ να αποκτούσα δεν θα ήμουν ευτυχισμένος αν δεν ήμουν καλά μέσα μου.Όμως σε αυτήν την ηλικία,όλοι θεωρούν πως πρώτος σου στόχος θα έπρεπε να είναι να αποκτήσεις τα οσο το δυνατόν περισσότερα χρήματα.

Η επιλογή της εργασίας γίνεται με βάση συνήθως αυτό.Τα χρήματα.Για αυτό καταντούν όλοι αγχωτικοί,νευρικοί,ψυχωτικοί.Είναι 30 χρονών και το μόνο που τους νοιάζει είναι να έχουν και να δείχνουν ότι έχουν χρήματα.Σιχαίνομαι τις περισσότερες εργασίες,και έχω κάνει πάρα πολλές μέσα σε αυτά τα χρόνια.Σέρβις,μπάρμαν,μπεημπησιττερ,πορτιερης,υποδοχή, ταμείας,γραμματέας,αφισσοκολλητης,φυλλάδια,τηλεφωνητής,πλασιέ,dj,καθένα από αυτά μου έτρωγε μέρα με την μέρα την ψυχή.Μου τσάκιζε την ψυχολογία.

Θα ήμουν όμως πολύ ευτυχισμένος αν μπορούσα να γράφω όλη μέρα για μουσική,να μιλάω για τους Wipers,να νοικιάζω σανίδες του σέρφ τις οποίες θα κατασκεύαζα εγώ,να διαβάζω βιβλία και να γράφω για αυτά,να τα αναλύω μέχρι τέλους,να βλέπω ταινίες και να τις κριτικάρω,να κάνω roller blades ατελείωτες ώρες κάτω από τον ήλιο και να μαθαίνω σε παιδάκια πώς να πατινάρουν.

Δεν θα αισθανόμουν όμορφα αν με έβαζαν σε ένα φιξαρισμένο πακέτο «γραβάτα-κοστούμι-μοκασίνι» και έπρεπε κάθε μέρα να πουλάω τον εαυτό μου με ψεύτικα χαμόγελα,ψεύτικες φιλίες,ψεύτικες αγκαλιές.Δεν θα άντεχα μια πλαστικοποιημένη ζωή,δεν θα άντεχα να γίνω ότι έχουν γίνει οι περισσότεροι φίλοι μου:Ανιαρός Μεσόκοπος.Να φάμε,να δούμε τον κώλο της γειτόνισσας,να κοιμηθούμε 12 νταν γιατί αύριο η απόδοση μας θα είναι χαμηλή,να ζηλέψουμε τα κουρτινόξυλα του ξαδέρφου,να βάζω πάνω από όλους και από όλα την πάρτη μου και τα φράγκα.Να βάζω πάνω από τον άνθρωπο που αγαπώ την καριέρα μου.
Χέστηκα για την «καριέρα» μου.Σπάνια στην ζωή αγαπάς,κάποιοι άνθρωποι μπορεί και ποτέ.Καριέρα μπορείς να κάνεις όποτε θέλεις,αρκεί είτε να αγαπάς αυτό που κάνεις,είτε να το μισέις/να σου είναι αδιάφορο και να μετατρεψεις την ζωή σου σε ένα παγόβουνο,το μυαλό σου σε έναν άκαμπτο οργανισμό και την ύπαρξη σου σε μία γκρίζα κινούμενη μάζα.

Ακόμα και τώρα,θα χαιρόμουν πάρα πολύ αν ένας φίλος μου μου έφερνε δώρο μία Kinder  έκπληξη αντί για μία γραβάτα.Grow old,not up.

Urban Waste-s/t e.p (1982 Mob Style Records)

N.Y's hardest ever 7".Better than United Blood,Cause for Alarm,Upset the system and equally great with Thou shalt not kill.Raw as hell,buzzsaw guitar,frantic rhythm,this 7" takes us back to the time and era when N.Y hardcore was first and foremost punk,without the gang mentality,the boring breakdowns and the streetware crap.
More raw than you ll ever be.Re released as an lp on Mad at the world records,i think in 2002.

Derozer-Chiusi dentro (2002 Mad Butcher)

One pretty underrated but great street punk band from Europe is Derozer.Formed in 1985,these Italians play melodic driven Streetpunk that it is impossible to resist to.Fast and melodic,with lyrics in Italian,great vocals,they remind me of the best 80s street punk bands mixed with the early 90s California punk
Well executed and precise,Derozer never miss a hit.

Heresy-20 reasons to end it all (2006 Boss Tuneage records)

This is a compilation of the "Whose Generation" 7",BBC Sessions,"13 Rocking Anthems","live at leeds" 7" and some other live songs.You should already know Heresy.If not,this was one of the best bands of the Britcore movement that took place in UK in the mid 80s.They carried andstill carry the hardcore torch through numerous bands (Geriatric Unit,Violent Arrest,Cant Decide) with quality.
Taking their cues from Boston Hardcore (SSD,DYS,Siege) and mixing it with the early UK82 sound,they managed to release some of the best hardcore records ever from UK.

Blitz-Second Empire Justice (1983 Future Records)

The Blitz is one of the greatest Punk bands of all time,not just in UK,but worldwide.Whereas their early skank material,the ultra lo-fi and vicious riffing really rocks my world,this one,their second full lp,is a great lp that combines post punk and new wave successfully.
I really love the Blitz and i believe that it was the band that stood out of all the oi/street punk sound of the early 80's in UK.50% skinheads and 50% punks,with much more talent than anyone in the scene,they left a great music heritage for punks to come.

Inferno-Hibakusha (1986 Rise & Fall Productions)

Germany's Inferno were some of the most hard and raw acts of their time.This is their second lp in which the bandis just slightly progressed the ultra raw hardcore punk of their first (and classic) "Tod und Wahnsinnn".The band released a triple lp/cd with all their output through their years of existence,which is called "Pioneering Work" on 2007 and it is on Weird System records.

Disorder-Perdition (1982 Disorder Records)

They were more crazed than Discharge,more catchy than Partisans,more brutal than Varukers,just as dark as Amebix.The first lp release of Disorder (after 2 7's and some compilation tracks) was just freaking great.Dark,haunting,fast and furious stuff,with alienated and depressing lyrics.Forget clowns like Exploited,this is one fine gem of UK82.
Life's a lung and i'm the cancer,still many questions,never an answer.

Spermbirds-Something to prove ( We Bite records 1986)

One of the greatest European acts ever,the Spermbirds are from Germany (except from Lee Hollis who is American) and are still going strong.This is their first classic record that has been re issued many times (the later is on Boss Tuneage).Classic European Hardcore punk that draws its influences from Minor Threat,Angry Samoans,Agent Orange.I rate so high this record,in my opinion it is better than all of Minor Threat's output (i know,sacrilege,but who gives a fuck).

Red Rockers-Condition Red (415 Records 1981)

Just imagine:A Punk rock band from New Orleans,in the late 70s.How more obscure can that be?Red Rockers were one of the very few acts of their day,time and place.The played perfectly executed punk rock in the vein of Clash,melodic but catchy as hell.Jello Biafra was a huge fan of them and also had some backing vocals in their re edition of Johny Cash-Folsom prison blues.Their first 7" Guns of Revolution and this record are masterpieces,avoid everything they did after that cause it's crappy new wave.

Raw Power-Screams From The Gutter (Toxic Shock 1985)

This one is one of the best hardcore records ever,and it is surely the best record ever that came from Italy (with Rough,Negazione,Wretched,Impact,Indigesti near close).Those crazy Italians played ferocious hardcore punk,a mix of American and European hardcore,with some guitar solos and totally CRAZED vocals.They had a huge following back then especially in the US,which is extraordinary for both a European and a Hardcore Punk band (remember:Even Minor Threat didnt have the chance to play in Europe back then!).
Raging stuff,and classic.This one is their second record,they are still going strong and still releasing records.

This is the first Red Dons record.These guys used to be (well,the 4/5 of them) in one of the greatest 00's punk bands,The Observers.Red Dons have also connections with bands like Clorox Girls,Defect Defect,Autistic Youth.In this first record,they pretty much continue the Observers sound.Hard hitting but melodic,with excellent vocals and lyrics.If you dig bands like Wipers you should definitely check them out.

The Mean Jeans-Are you serious? (Dirtnap Records 2009)

Ahh,tis one is a real gem.Ramones meets Screeching Weasel,just an awesome record from these guys that now live in Portland (seems that many great American acts live or relocate to Portland these days).Awesome stuff,way too catchy and funny,this is a record that has been in my turntable for endless hours.Of course,its on Dirtnap.

Off With Their Heads-From the Bottom (No Idea Records 2008)

This band is really great.Never mind the hype that has been around them the past 2 years,Off with their heads are a genuine punk rock band,fueled with much power.They remind me of a more street punk version of Dillinger Four.They sound so tight and familiar with each other,you might even think that these guys are friends since kindergarden. Awesome band with lots of releases.

Fastbacks-Very,very powerful motor (PopLLama records1990)

The Fastbacks  are one of the most criminally underrated bands ever.Coming from Seattle,they started out as a band in early 80s,exposing their melodic punk rock to the world.The Buzzcocks and the Ramones stand out highly influential for them,but it wasn’t only those bands that influenced Fastbacks.I havent found not even one bad Fastbacks record,and I chose this one because it seems very scarce on the internet.

in a time where boring hair metal was the thing,early hardcore bands gone either crossover or rock oriented,there was a very small space for melodic but true punk rock.This record seemed back then out of time,but now,it seems like a  breath of fresh air.Highly inspired stuff,some more melodic,some more furious (“Says who”).

D.S 13-Killed by the kids (Havoc Records 2001)

Demon system 13 were one of the most furious,fast,and awesome hardcore punk bands in the late 90s/early 00s.These Swedes were playing a mix of early american hardcore like Agnostic Front,7 seconds and early Swedish sound,but way more furious and technically precised.

In this lp(artwork by Pushead),they simply rip.Makes my day anytime,such a classic record of the new(old) generation of hardcore.And a brutal cover of the Germ’s-Media Blitz.Mosh till you drop.

The Gun Club-Death Party e.p (Animal Records 1983)

Forget posers like Motley Crue,Ratt and that kind of stupid stuff.This is the real deal,raucous rock n roll with heart and attitude.Despite their poser-styled hair,Gun Club were never posers in any kind of way...
This is one of Gun Club's best works ever.I really love this e.p,it combines the punk rock harshness with rock n roll and blues so damn good,i can't resist listening to this all the time.
Of course,you know how talented Jeffrey was.But also self destructive.These elements are easily recognisable in Gun Club's sound.Fierce,melodic,inspired but also just like falling off a cliff.
Such a great band.One of the best of the 80's.

Toxic Reasons-Within these walls (Treason Records 1985)

One of the most underated U.S bands is Toxic Reasons.Along with Zero Boys,Mad Parade,Channel 3 etc they still carry the torch of punk,whereas most of their contemporaries have either fall into rock crapola or just split up.
This is their 3rd lp.Their first lps seemed like a mix of the Uk and Canada punk (especially Uk Subs  and DOA),but this one is totally different,it reminds of the most melodic times of The Effigies,Killing Joke mixed with the punk rock's sharp sound.
All their records are great,just get them.

The Briefs-Off the charts (Dirtnap records 2003)

Hell,news do really travel slow in Greece.This band exists from 2000 and i only got the chance to hear them the past week,where i got this Lp.
They started from Dirtnap records,which means that they really are good,as there are no bad bands in Dirtnap,ever.Their style is catchy punk with some anthems being more pop punk and other leaning towards the street punk sound.They have released many records (other 4) and i m looking forward to get them on my hands.This is their second lp.

Germ Attak-Ouroboros (Capitalicide Records 2007)

These Canucs might have reached their peak with this album.More Disorder/Chaos UK influenced than their later stuff (who was influenced more from Partisans/Abrassive Wheels).All their records are equally great but this one is totally raging.

Social Circkle-City Shock (No Way Records 2010)

Ok,now we are talking about one of the greatest records of this year.Social Circle play hardcore inspired stuff,just like a cross of early Circle Jerks with the Adolescents.I really cant get enough of this band,all their songs are totally memorable and catchy,fast and furious hardcore punk for people that admire early 80s punk and hardcore stuff.

Agent Orange-Living in Darkness (Posh boy 1981)

I was confused.Wipers,Mad parade,Channel 3?Thought though that it will be ok if the first record that i would post would be a "change my life record".Crap,don't know.It is one of the most beautiful records i have ever heard.
Agent Orange came from the sunny Orange County.In a time where all bands sounded unique,Agent Orange blended their super tight punk sound with surf music and their nearly (just right there) depressive lyrics made them loveable to punks,surf/garage guys and also to proto-goths.
This is their first record from 1981 on Posh Boy records.Listen to it carefully,it might change your life too.
